Gerald Albright - Sax For Stax

PEAK RECORDS SETS JUNE 24th RELEASE FOR SAXOPHONE GREAT GERALD ALBRIGHT'S
SAX FOR STAX

For his eleventh album, his second for the Peak Records label, multi-dimensional saxophone great Gerald Albright turns his soulful attention to the spirit of Memphis R&B as served up by the legendary Stax Records company with his new recording, Sax for Stax.

Produced by Albright himself (with half of the songs co-produced by Rex Rideout), the project consists of three Albright originals ("Memphis Passion", a duet with tenor sax king Kirk Whalum titled "Walking Down Beale Street" and a decidedly contemporary salute to the Father of the Blues titled "W.C. Handy Hop"), plus eight covers of classic Stax wax. Highlights include a thrilling update on Isaac Hayes obscure '70's theme to the ABC-TV crime series "The Men" (featuring a scintillating string arrangement by Mark Cargill and peppery percussion by Lenny Castro), a revisit to the Staple Singers' ever-reverent "Respect Yourself" featuring singer Ledisi, two hot and spicy Johnnie Taylor covers ("Cheaper To Keep Her" & "Who's Making Love"), a version of vocal quintet The Dramatics' fittingly dynamic "What You See is What You Get" featuring Earth, Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey, and a triumphant collaboration with his longtime friend Will Downing on a soothing groove through the timeless gem "Never Can Say Goodbye" (originally a Motown hit for the Jackson 5, yes, but soon after also a Stax smash for Isaac Hayes). Compiled with an impeccable balance of jazz and soul, Gerald Albright's Stax for Sax is about to make the summer of 2008 ten degrees hotter!
