Corey Wilkes & Abstrakt Pulse | Cries From Tha Ghetto

Corey Wilkes's Cries from Tha Ghetto, the  30-year old trumpeter/bandleader's April (2009) release on Pi Recordings. The Chicago native was hand picked by  mentor Roscoe Mitchell to replace the legendary Lester Bowie in the Art Ensemble of Chicago.  This sophomore release-- featuring Wilkes' band Abstrakt Pulse -- embraces the hard-bop traditions of the 1950s and '60s, attesting to the pervasive versatility of Wilkes' art. Mainstream jazz, free-form experimentation, hip-hop-tinged improv -- there's nary a genre that Wilkes doesn't explore. This kind of stylistic versatility, paired with Wilkes' nimble technique, has won the trumpeter critical accolades. The New York Times has cited his "smartly balanced bravado, power and control."
